As trends come and go, some always remain. However, sometimes the name might change.

You might have noticed the term cake smash photo be thrown around on Facebook a lot lately.

In this article, I’m going to tell you exactly what a cake smash photo is.

Here goes!

A cake smash photo is a photograph of a one-year-old baby literally smushing a cake.  Traditionally these are done as the baby turns one, but they can be done anytime. The reason for age one is, so the photographs are documenting the baby’s first time experiencing cake.

Here are some sample photographs of some cake smash sessions I have done.

As you can recognize, these photographs can be done in a variety of ways.

  • Wood floor
  • Bare wall
  • White background
  • Textured background
  • Textured floor
  • Decorated or not

The style is up to the parents. It’s the photographer’s job to make the moment special and document it for the child to enjoy when older.
