1Password, An Essential Photographer Tool

1password-password-management

Photographer tools come in all shapes and sizes.  For instance, I previously shared a list of essential WordPress plugins for photographers and WordPress themes for photographers.  So as you might have guessed, in this article, I will tell you why I believe 1Password is an essential photographer tool.

For those who do not know, 1Password is a password management application.  Originally, it was developed for Mac, but has since become available for Windows, iOS and Android devices.

  • Use multiple Logins for the same site
  • Create multiple Identities for filling into registration forms, surveys, and shopping carts
  • Securely sync your data over-the-air between Macs, iPhones, and iPads with Dropbox, or locally over Wi-Fi
  • Store other sensitive information in Secure Notes
  • Save software licenses and receipts
  • Organize everything with tags and folders

1Password for Photographers

I am going to go through a variety of features and uses within 1Password.  If you’re interested in the software, please click my link to purchase the Mac or iOS versions as I will receive a small commission.  Please note that although I am an affiliate for 1Pasword, I really do highly recommend the product and can guarantee that even security professionals are using it.

Password Management

Securely store all your passwords.  Categorize whether they’re for business or personal.  Keep them safe from prying eyes using military grade encryption.  Use one one strong password to unlock the application.

Password Generation

Many applications have password generation built-in.  However, 1Password does it better because of the advanced settings that you can utilize to create the strongest password you’ll ever see.  Remember that you will never have to remember the crazy long password because with 1Password, you only need to remember the master.

In addition, after creating the password, you have the ability to automatically save it to your library.

Accounts

One of the features that I could see getting overlooked is the accounts section. Here you can add things like your iTunes credentials, email or FTP accounts and so on.

Secure Notes

If you need to store private and secure notes, then 1Password is the perfect solution.

Software

Keeping track of your software is so much easier with 1Password.  All you have to do is type the name of the software and its license key.  Then you can throw the paperwork away.

The wallet area is the perfect place to securely store your business information, like credit cards, bank account, etc.

I’ve used 1Password for years, too. Just for kicks I did a clean install of OS X for the first time in five years and having all my serial numbers in 1Password made the process of installing apps so much easier. I also wanted to mention that adding an app to 1Password is as simple as dragging that app’s icon into the 1Password app or onto its app icon. That fills in the app name, version number and gives you a nice app icon as well.
