If you grew up in the 80s or 90s, you probably remember sitting cross-legged in front of a glowing CRT television, gripping a plastic orange light gun, and trying to hit pixelated ducks flying across the screen. Duck Hunt was an absolute classic. But as a photographer, I often wondered what the game would look like if the goal was capturing an image instead of hunting.
That is exactly why I created Photo Hunt.
It is a free, browser-based mini-game that trades the classic arcade blaster for a camera. The objective is simple: You have exactly three minutes to photograph as many ducks as possible.
Here is why I think you are going to love playing it:
- Trade Bullets for Film: Instead of firing a weapon, your main character is a camera that shoots literal rolls of film to capture the fast-moving subjects. You use your arrow keys to pan left and right, and you hit the spacebar to snap your shot. It is a fun, arcade-style take on tracking a moving subject with your lens.
- Beware of the Distracting Dog: In the original arcade game, the hunting dog was your companion. In Photo Hunt, the dog is the ultimate distraction. Every so often, a brown dog will casually stroll across the grass. If you accidentally photograph the dog, your game is over instantly. It is a great reminder to keep your focus strictly on your main subject.
- The Three-Minute Crunch: You have exactly 180 seconds to build up your high score. The ducks fly across the screen at random intervals and varying speeds, requiring quick reflexes and a fast shutter finger. It is the perfect, quick distraction for when you need a short break from editing photos.
- Pure Nostalgic Audio: I made sure to include retro sound effects to complete the experience. You will hear the digital beep of your camera firing, a satisfying chime when you land a great shot, and an upbeat background track to keep your energy high.
- Bragging Rights Included: When the timer finally runs out, or if you accidentally photograph the dog, the game tallies up your points. You can then use the built-in share buttons to post your final score to Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads, or wherever you hang out online.
Ready to test your photography reflexes?
The game is completely free, runs perfectly in your web browser, and even features touch controls if you are playing on a mobile device.
See how high of a score you can get in three minutes. Just remember to keep your lens pointed at the sky, and leave the dog alone!
