Transform A Similar Tone Photo Into An Abstract

ocean-scene

We all have those photographs that make wonder why we took the picture or how we could salvage it.

It’s inevitable that there will be a boring shot in a batch of great ones.

I spent some time going through photos from a recent shoot at a beach.  I was in search for a photo that I could turn into artwork for the house Melissa and I are trying to buy.

At first glance I was going to overlook this ocean scene because of how boring it is.  It needed some flavor.  Maybe something in the sky, or some more detail.

Since I was in Lightroom I made a virtual copy of the image, and started adjusting the exposure, brightness, clarity, and other sliders.

My end goal was to create a Black & White abstract that would look great on canvas.  Below is what I achieved.

What I like about the new abstract is how from a distance you cannot tell what it is, but up close you can clearly see that is an ocean view.

Sometimes it is not about the client.  Sometimes it is about the photographer.

Thanks for reading and happy shooting,

Scott

  1. Isn’t Rhein II, the most expensive photograph ever sold (according to Wikipedia) a similarly “boring” composition of shoreline, water and sky? Even that was digitally edited to remove people and animals. Art is weird – the boring stuff sometimes sells for millions of Dollars!

    1. Looks like you may be right! Here is the link you referring to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhein_II
