Surprise Proposal Photographer in NJ

I am a New Jersey guy offering New Jersey couples a chance to capture that big moment forever. As a professional photographer with 20 years of experience. You can be confident that your proposal will be documented beautifully.

In 2010, I planned my proposal in great detail, recorded a video of it, and photographed it myself without my (now) wife realizing what was happening.

She was so mad at me for slowing down her morning routine and making her late for work. Little did she know I called her boss and got her the day off.

Since then many other couples have asked me to document their proposals. I’ve had the honor of documenting simple and complex surprise proposals throughout New Jersey.

I will document the magic

One knee, two hearts, a lifetime together.

I will safely help surprise your partner, photograph you both, and not intrude on the special moment.

Enjoy your moment

The perfect way to surprise your love!

Too often, we are standing behind our cameras or our phones instead of being in the moment.

Sometimes, we ask a friend to document the proposal.

Forget that – and leave it to the expert. Let me document what’s happening for you.

Every proposal has a story—let me tell yours.

How We Pull Off the Perfect Surprise (Without a Hitch)

1

Whether you are envisioning the Manhattan skyline, a manicured estate walkway, or a golden hour moment on a Jersey Shore boardwalk, we finalize the exact location. I handle the backend logistical research regarding county permits and map out the precise spot based on optimal sun angles.

2

We map out an exact arrival timeline and communication code. On the day of your proposal, I will be in place early, operating under the radar to ensure nothing spoils the surprise.

3

Using ultra-telephoto professional lenses, I frame your arrival from 50 to 75 feet away, remaining entirely hidden. You wait for our agreed-upon visual cue, drop to one knee, and focus entirely on your partner while every raw emotion is captured with absolute clarity.

4

Once the shock settles and they spot me, the celebration begins! We pivot immediately into an upbeat, high-energy portrait session to document that irreplaceable, ecstatic energy of being officially engaged.

How Surprise Proposal Photography Sessions Work

Scott photographed my proposal to my Fiancé and we could not be happier!! He was definitely more prepared than I was! He scouted out the area and kept communicx1` ation the whole way through. He was so discrete, my fiancé had no clue that he was even there. I would 100% recommend his services to anyone! Check out how it came out!

I used Scott to help capture the moment when I proposed to my now fiancé. He was easy to communicate with, punctual, and most importantly got the shot. The photos were perfect and he also helped us print matted versions to hang out our walls. I’d recommend his photography service to anyone.”

Scott was fantastic!! He kept me updated every step of the way when planning my proposal and kept in close contact on the day of our proposal. He took charge of a great photo shoot after our proposal capturing many diverse shots and backgrounds. Can’t recommend him enough!

Everything You Wanted to Know about Surprise Proposal Photography

Will you stay hidden so the surprise isn’t ruined?

Absolutely. My goal is to be a “fly on the wall” until the big moment happens. I use professional long lenses that allow me to capture close-up emotion while standing far enough away to remain undetected. I often blend in as a landscape photographer or a tourist until you being to propose or give the signal. You focus on the question; I’ll handle the stealth.

Do you help me plan the location and timing?

Yes. I believe a proposal photographer should also be a partial planner. Whether you are looking for a historic backdrop like Princeton University or a beach setting in Asbury Park, I will scout the location, check the lighting (sunrise vs. sunset), and help you create a timeline that ensures the best possible photos.

How quickly will we get photos to share?

I know you’ll want to announce the news right away! You will receive a “sneak peek” gallery of highlight images within 24 hours of the proposal to share with family and social media. Your full, edited gallery will be ready for you within 2-3 weeks.

Can we take engagement portraits afterwards?

Yes! Once the “Yes!” is said and the emotions settle, I usually transition right into a mini-engagement session. It’s the perfect time to capture that “just engaged” glow while you are already dressed up and in a beautiful location.

How do we coordinate the exact spot without seeing each other?

We will finalize the exact spot beforehand using maps and sample photos. On the day of, we will communicate via text (with me likely posing as a work contact or friend in your phone to avoid suspicion). I will be in position early and text you a confirmation so you can walk into the frame with confidence.

What if it rains on the proposal day?

We always create a “Plan B.” During our planning consultation, we will discuss backup indoor locations or covered areas that still offer great light. If the weather is severe, we can discuss rescheduling options to ensure your moment looks perfect.

How do I get my partner to dress up without them knowing?

This is the most common challenge! A popular trick is to plan a “fake” dinner reservation at a nice restaurant for after the proposal, giving you a valid excuse to dress up. Alternatively, if you are proposing on a hike or beach walk, we can embrace the “casual/lifestyle” vibe, or you can have a change of clothes ready in the car for the portrait session afterwards.

Do you travel outside of New Jersey for proposals?

While I am based in Freehold and specialize in NJ locations like Princeton, Asbury Park, and the Jersey Shore, I am available for travel to NYC, Philadelphia, and beyond. Please inquire for a custom travel quote.

What happens if people are walking by?

Public locations often have bystanders, but I am expert at framing shots to minimize distractions. Often, when people see a proposal happening, they naturally stop and watch respectfully. I can also recommend quieter “hidden gem” locations if you prefer total privacy.

Do you capture video of the proposal?

My primary focus is high-quality still photography to capture the split-second emotions. However, I do my best to record BTS video as well.

Will you help me with posing?

During the actual proposal, I capture candid, documentary-style moments—no posing required! Once the surprise is revealed and we start the mini-engagement session, I will gently guide you both with simple prompts to make you feel comfortable and look your best.

How far in advance should I book?

I recommend booking 4-6 weeks in advance. This gives us ample time to scout locations, monitor the weather, and plan the logistics without stress. However, if you have a last-minute plan, reach out! I will do my best to accommodate you.

How do I book you without my partner seeing the emails?

I am very discreet with communication. We can communicate primarily via a non-shared email address or text messages. I can also refrain from sending branded mail or calendar invites that might pop up on shared devices until the secret is out.
