Dave, if you are on a Mac there are a lot of great duplicate finding software out there that can help. I have multiple drivers with the same files as well.. That is a good thing. Hard drives fail so easily that multiple copies is ideal. Example being.. I have 2 Drobo's. Both have 4 drives in it with the same files.. That is 8 hard drives that are a copy of the Lightroom Library.. which to me is the only important thing on my computer. My JungleDisk backup is the same. Secure off site backup and 8 hard drives. Can't go wrong!

I'm not too familiar with PC backups but I can recommend checking out John Milleker (<a href="http://johnmilleker.com/" rel="nofollow">http://johnmilleker.com/</a>) he uses a PC, is in the IT field.. and is a great photographer. Maybe he can give you some advice more specific to your problem :-)

Any tips for fixing a digital mess? I have multiple external hard drives with multiple copies of files, along with an internal hard drive that has mostly the same files. I'm thinking about using some kind of file duplicate finding software to clean off/consolidate one or more external drives, and then using some kind of back up scheme to have original files on my desktop, a local backup and an offsite backup. I'd like this to be as painless as possible!Alternatively, would it work to use lightroom start a new catalog of my desktop images. Then import all the external hard drive images, but use the "Don't import duplicates" box. Then wipe the external (since all duplicates would be ignored, and the originals saved on the internal) and use the external for a backup?
