An old coworker of mine sent me an email asking if I could photograph a new cake product she is making. Luana and her husband own a deli and catering business and the cakepops are new products that they will offer in the deli and for parties. They are quite tasty! There are many flavor and styles, however this photo is of the coconut ones.

Instead of making a lighting diagram to show the lighting I used, I decided to snap a shot with my cell phone. For something as small as a cakepop, you don’t really need big lights. You need a small area with just enough lighting to give the product pop.
I used the Nikon 105mm Macro lens, which for some of the shots, forced me to backup in order to get multiple cakepops in the frame. Two SB-900 flashes on the sides and one SB-800 on top. All were dialed down to the lowest power because I didn’t need to much light.

I’ve done a bit of food photography – https://markblundell.photoshelter.com/gallery/Tate-Canapes/G0000c0FiEnc1xxQ/ and use exactly the same setup as you. I only have the two lfashes so set then up high pointing down, but it works very well.
There’s a fair bit of tweaking involved, but the results are great as you’ve shown.
The little boxes are great for small products. Nice shots Mark!
Scott, I want to start doing more photography like this. Do you recommend buying a light box or building one (DIY)?
The folding and pop-ups are not expensive, but if you think you’re going to shoot larger products eventually then you might want to go DIY.
Slick! They look awesome and makes me want to shoot some of this stuff. I only have an sb-900 and I’d end up making a DIY box
You could probably pull it off with one light and strategic positioning.
