Make the grade, fix the page

As photographers we are not always on top of website improvements. We have better things to do like take pictures. Go figure, right? However, there are a couple tools that you can use to make quick improvements to help you rank better on search engines. The first one I will be talking about in my upcoming eBook. The second, which will also be mentioned in the eBook, is called Website Grader from HubSpot. Website Grader is also a free tool.

What It Does

Website Grader is a free SEO tool that measures the marketing effectiveness of a website. It provides a score that incorporates things like website traffic, SEO, social popularity and other technical factors. It also provides some basic advice on how the website can be improved from a marketing perspective.

How I Did

A website grade of 99/100 for scottwyden.com means that of the millions of websites that have previously been evaluated, our algorithm has calculated that this site scores higher than 99% of them in terms of its marketing effectiveness. The algorithm uses a proprietary blend of over 50 different variables, including search engine data , website structure, approximate traffic, site performance, and others.

What It Looks For

  • Blog & RSS Feed
  • Recent Blog Articles
  • Indexed Pages
  • Readability
  • Metadata
  • Headings
  • Images with ALT tags
  • Interior Pages
  • Domain Information (age, expire)
  • MOZ Rank (via SEOmoz)
  • Inbound linking domains
  • Twitter account
  • Tweets
  • Twitter score
  • Conversion forms
  • Traffic

Keep in mind when reviewing your score details, that it is not exact. For example, my report said I didn’t have certain retweets or ALT tags when I actually did and do.

So How Does It Help?

The reason Website Grader helps increase your page rank is because it will point out possible flaws in your website. It will show changes and adjustments that should be looked at and possibly made. It will offer suggestions and tips to improving your website. By doing everything you can to improve your website, means that your page rank will improve.

If your report states that you have no meta information (title, description, keywords) then you should go back and add the proper information to improve your page rank.

In Closing

I will leave you with this thought. While Website Grader may not be perfect, it is one of the tools that I use to make sure that my website is at its full potential. It is worth getting your score, reading your report and trying to make your website changes as needed.

Thanks for reading and happy grading,

Scott
