After much debate I decided to buy a Moxi for the following reasons. Live TV, DVR with no fees, Hulu and Netflix. Extra bonus being Flickr. Buy owning a box without any monthly fees I would be saving so much on TV bills. I’d have access to HBO and Showtime shows via Netflix so I’d be saving over $20 from Comcast. The Moxi Mate would enable me to get rid of the HD box in my other room and still stream the Netflix and Hulu HD content there. That would save me another $20 from Comcast.
Why did I return it?
I didn’t realize that the Moxi doesn’t have built-in software to access the internet shows. I had to download software from PlayOn which would give me the access. What this means is that the computer would have to be on to watch the shows and I’d have an application running in the background. To make it even better, PlayOn is only for Windows so I’d have have to run leave my VMWare virtual OS open as well. I wasn’t feeling it.
My feelings. Great idea for the box but you could have easily built that software right into the machine itself. Other than the actual performance of the Moxi, while trying to figure everything out there customer service was horrible. During business hours the phone would not pick up and emails would not be returned. The only way to get in touch with someone was Live Chat on their website. I should also note that even though I had trouble speaking to someone over the phone before purchasing the Moxi I did get all of my questions answered via the Live Chat as well so I wasn’t surprised.
Sorry Moxi, this could have been the start of something spectacular.
In other news, Moxi (Digeo, Inc) has recently been acquired by a company called ARRIS so hopefully they will improve the product.
Thanks for reading!
